Communication is a vital skill in entrepreneurship. As a business owner and an entrepreneur, you have to communicate with your customers, partners, suppliers, mentors, and your team every day. As Richar Branson, the founder of Virgin Group said, “Communication is the most important skill any leader can possess”. Communication in entrepreneurship is an indispensable element to business success.

Why is communication In entrepreneurship Important?

You can’t avoid communication with people. Even if you are working as a solopreneur without a team, you have to communicate with your customers at some point. Communication is a massive part of entrepreneurship, it has the power to make or destroy your business. There are numerous reasons why acquiring the skill of communication is crucial as an entrepreneur, as listed below.

Building Strong Team Relationships

Imagine working for a boss who barely talks to you. You have to guess his intentions and struggle to understand what he wants. The whole team is a mess because everyone is lost.

Communication is the foundation of a strong team. Only through communication, a leader can clearly convey his vision and goal, understand the struggles, challenges, and problems his team faces, and support everything he can. He is the one who brings everyone together to work as a team, encourages them, provides feedback, and helps them improve. It can’t be done without communication.

Attracting and retaining customers

You may have an excellent product, but your customers may not understand why they need it. Communicating the values of the product or service is what turns lead into your customer, which is why marketing is important.

Marketing is about communicating the values of your product or service to your customers so they understand the change your product or service can bring to their lives. You could have the best product ever, but if you can’t explain why it’s great, it’s not going to matter. Your product is only as good as your communication skills.

Furthermore, communicating is crucial also in retaining your customers. Loyal customers are made from great customer service. Learning how to engage with customers, listen to their feedback, and address their concerns is necessary. As a leader, you may not be directly involved in engaging with customers, but if you don’t possess the skill, your team won’t either.

Attracting Investors and Partners

The same principle applies when dealing with investors and partners. If you have watched Shark Tank or Dragons’ Den, you would know that one question most investors try to figure out in the shows is “Why do people need it? ”

Communication and an elevator pitch are important because of this very reason. They are what connect the dots and help your investors and partners understand the value of your product, why people need it, and how it can make them a fortune. It should also be mentioned that knowing how to communicate is a negotiating skill to helps you close deals.

Tips for communication in entrepreneurship

Clarity and Conciseness

As the leader of your company, oftentimes you will have to use words to describe your vision and what you are trying to achieve. As your team does not have the same way of thinking as you, you need to convey clear, direct messages that are easy to understand. Making your messages concise yet maintaining completeness can avoid confusion and miscommunication.

Active Listening

Communication is not just about talking, in order to have mutual understanding of a subject, you will also need to learn how to pay attention to what others are saying. Asking clarifying questions when communicating is a sign that you are paying attention to what others are saying.

Emotional Intelligence

Right things said at the wrong time are a wasted effort, no matter how correct you are.  Unpleasant but necessary truths, when delivered at the right moment, can be powerful catalysts for change. Successful entrepreneurs know when they should and shouldn’t have a difficult conversation, they find the right time to deliver those messages.

For example, publicly rejecting an employee’s opinion or criticizing their work during a group meeting may undermine someone’s confidence.

Perceptive leaders are not afraid to have sensitive conversations, but they find the right time to address them.

Optimal method of communication

Utilize the most optimal method of communication depending on your circumstances. Written communication such as emails, reports, and documentation keeps a record of all the information and details, so they are easily accessible. Written communication ensures serious matters are discussed and dealt with in the fastest way possible. Visual communication such as charts, graphs, and pictures can describe better than words.

However, all communication methods have their downsides. There is potential for miscommunication in written communication,  meetings can be a waste of time, ” and complex charts are unnecessary when a simple “increase by 20%” can do the job.
